Olympics 2012: Vijay Kumar wins silver to give India second medal at Games

Army sharp shooter Vijay Kumar on Friday fought a nerve-wracking battle with five other top marksmen to clinch the silver medal in the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the Olympic Games in London.

Kumar beat back the challenge of world champion Alexei Klimov of Russia, Chinese
duo of Ding Feng and Zhang Jian and German Christian Reitz in the 40-shot final to finish runner-up in a thrilling finale behind Cuba's Leuris Pupo who shot his way to the gold with a world record equalling score of 34. The 26-year-old army subedar from Himachal Pradesh found the target 30 times out of 40 attempts in the series comprising eight rounds of five shots each.
Kumar started with a bang, hitting the target all five times and kept himself in the hunt for a medal by consistently finding the target.
After a perfect five out of five at the start, Kumar, a double gold medallist in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, found the target four times in the second and third series, but missed it twice in the fourth.
He came back strongly by finding the target four times in the next three rounds and assured himself of a silver. In the last round after Pupo shot four to clinch the gold, Kumar seemed to relax a bit and missed three targets.
The bronze medal was won by Feng with a tally of 27.

NEW DELHI: Team Anna on Thursday blinked in the battle of attrition with the government by announcing plans to end the indefinite fast Friday evening as it pitched for an alternative to the current political system.

Anna Hazare's announcement on calling off the agitation demanding Lokpal Bill at 5pm tomorrow came on a day when a group of eminent personalities, including jurist V R Krishna Iyer and former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, appealed for an end to the fast as the health of Arvind Kejriwal and two others deteriorated.

"We will end the fast tomorrow at 5pm," Hazare said at the end of an address in which he enunciated the civil society's approach to forming a political alternative.

The end to the fast also comes in the wake of the government's steadfast attitude in not engaging with Hazare and his team, a year after both sides were involved in drafting a law and Parliament adopting a "sense of House" resolution on passage of Lokpal Bill.

On the earlier occasions in April and August last year, the government appeared to have come under pressure from Hazare's protests which drew huge crowds in the capital and elsewhere.

The protest fast has been marked by low turnout, contradictory statements and levelling of wild charges against government and its functionaries. While Hazare refused to attack Pranab Mukherjee after he became President, his team members continued to level allegations against him.

Talking about providing an alternative to the current system, Hazare ruled out launching or joining a political party but asked people to come out with ideas on how the alternative can be provided.

"It is time for us to think of an alternative. We want a political alternative. But I will not launch or join a party. People should decide who should be given tickets and how to achieve that alternative system," he said.

Questions still remained as to what Team Anna would do regarding the political alternative and whether they would launch a party themselves.

Country Road Buys Witchery Group For $180 Million

Australian retailer Country Road is buying Witchery Group from Gresham Private Equity for 172 million Australian dollars (US$180.2 million), looking beyond the nation’s current subdued consumer spending environment.
The Witchery Group is a fashion retailer with Witchery and Mimco stores across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom.  In fiscal 2011, Witchery Group generated about A$266 million in revenue and about A$34 million in normalized earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization.

“The acquisition of Witchery Group creates one of Australia’s largest specialty fashion retailers with complementary brands and a strong position in the mid to upper tier specialist retail sector,” Country Road Chairman Ian Moir said in a statement.
The retailer reckons the acquisition could create significant shareholder value through synergies estimated around A$10 million on an annualized basis over four years.
Country Road will partly fund the purchase through a A$92 million capital raising which will allow shareholders to buy one new share for every two existing shares at an offer price of A$2.66, a 19% discount to the stock’s closing price Tuesday. The deal will also be funded through a new A$92 million five-year senior bank facility.
Rothschild-advised Country Road said its 88%-shareholder South African company Woolworths Holdings will take part in the capital raising and contribute about A$81 million of new equity.
“Woolworths South Africa obviously feel like it’s a good deal if they’re going to fully subscribe,” Country Road’s third-largest shareholder Nestor Hinzack told Deal Journal Australia, adding that he is supporting the equity issue.
“If the synergies stated come through, it’s a good deal and it’ll really broaden Country Road’s presence in the market,” added Mr. Hinzack.

Friendship Day: what it is about

New Delhi: Friendship Day celebrations are held on different dates in different countries of the world. The first World Friendship Day was proposed on 30 July 1958 in Paraguay. On 27 April, 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 30 July as official International Friendship Day. However, in India, Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. 



Friendship Day was originally proposed by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1919, intended to be the first Sunday of August and a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. The first Sunday in August was chosen as the centre of the largest lull between holiday celebrations but it faced consumer resistance, given that it was rather too obviously a commercial gimmick to promote greetings cards
