photoREUTERS - Holiday shoppers are increasingly pulling out their phones instead of their debit cards when it comes time to pay for a purchase, but what risks are they exposing themselves to when they do that? If you are charging items to your phone bill, you have limited protection, according to a new study by Consumers Union, which is telling consumers not to use pay-by-phone programs that pass charges through the phone company. The advocacy group has been urging mobile carriers to recognize the responsibilities that come with being a financial intermediary. ...

photoLONDON (Reuters) - New DNA tests looking for the virus responsible for most cases of cervical cancer make sense for all women aged 30 or over, since they can prevent more cases of cancer than smear tests alone, Dutch researchers said on Thursday. photo(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc shares dropped to levels not seen since March Wednesday on concern that big spending and aggressive pricing by the No. 1 Internet retailer will hit profit during the crucial holiday season and well into next year. T he shares slipped 30 cents to close at $180.21, but touched $170.25 earlier in the day. That put the stock at the lowest level since late March and left it in negative territory for the year. Google donates $11.5 million to fight modern slavery

photoREUTERS - Google Inc is donating $11.5 million in grants to fight modern slavery and its hold on 27 million people worldwide, the technology company said on Wednesday. The donation is believed to be one of the largest corporate initiatives ever to fight slavery. Google said on its charitable website that its grants will "free more than 12,000 people from modern-day slavery" and prevent "millions more from being victimized." The company lists 10 recipients of its anti-slavery grants. The money will mainly go to intervention and education projects in India, Europe and the United States. ...

BSE Sensex sheds 0.8 pct; sticky inflation disappoints

photoMUMBAI (Reuters) - The BSE Sensex ended 0.8 percent lower in choppy trade on Wednesday as November inflation held stubbornly above 9 percent, disappointing investors, but growing hopes that the Reserve Bank of India could keep rates steady this week and likely adopt a more dovish tone amid slowing growth dabbed some cheer. The wholesale price index in November rose 9.11 percent from a year earlier, remaining above 9 percent for 12 consecutive months despite 13 rate increases by the RBI Inflation, however, eased from October's 9.73 percent rise, driven by a sharp drop in food inflation. ...
